汤米．海仑在1956年生于美国新泽西州（New Jersey），离著名的赌城大西洋城（Atlantic City）仅仅50哩，他10岁就开始DB─对牆壁投掷硬币，愈接近牆壁的人就赢得所有硬币。高中时代，他打篮球、高尔夫、棒球，并且参与运动博彩，他后来念了俄亥俄州的维滕贝格大学，汤米承认当时他是不好的学生，整天都在玩高尔夫、扑克跟打靶。' y4 X8 n4 [% `! K
8 A3 j5 y' Z6 G+ L$ D1978年，他还在学校时，汤米跟他的室友读到了劳伦斯维尔的《21点事业》。他们研读了该书并且不断练习。汤米的室友，当时比汤米还要热衷21点，并且在大西洋城赢了数千美金。他的室友激发了汤米认真研读跟练习21点的动力，并且在1979年春天，汤米已经准备好要当职业算牌客。

汤米也读到肯．乌斯顿（Ken．Uston）的书《百万21点》。汤米的第一个团队是两人小组──他跟他的高尔夫同伴里奥（Leo）。汤米从1000美金开始在短短6个月中变成4倍。汤米跟里奥后来又跟大西洋城认识的算牌客道格，还有大卫结合成更大的团队。在1979年底的时候，这个4人团队已经将1.6万的本金变成10万美金以上了。当时大西洋城赌场开始使用“早降”的规则，对职业玩家更有利。$ B1 M" l. x! Q7 }- t6 [$ |
