Erik Seidel出生于纽约。Erik在20世纪70年代也就是他17-18岁的时候开始专心于西洋棋并能靠这个赚取日常花费。他进入布鲁克林大学，在拿到学位之后计划找一个“真正的”工作，但是有时“真正的”工作是令人腻烦的。西洋棋就让他忙碌起来，他非常喜欢参加锦标赛。后来Erik被朋友介绍去做股票贸易。1 {$ D5 v0 t, g B5 Q" t
( I4 Z y1 G' a" j9 L) A2 S- W 在20世纪80年代中期，Erik去了几次拉斯维加斯参加世界西洋棋业余选手锦标赛这样的比赛。在一次旅行中，他开始玩扑克，并且在他回到纽约之后也开始玩很多的扑克。在著名的Mayfair俱乐部中有一些桥牌和西洋棋选手开始定期的玩扑克，而在那里玩牌的人中有很多的好手，其中的代表有Howard Lederer 和 Dan Harrington。

1992年，Erik在$2500有限hold';em比赛的中赢得他的第一个WSOP金手链。接下来的两年里，每年他都获得了一个手链，拿下了Omaha$2500比赛和接下来的1994年$5,000有限hold';em比赛。胜利让他决定离开纽约，到一个玩牌更容易的地方去，他劝服了他的妻子Ruah搬到了赌城拉斯维加斯。

Erik在2001年赢得他最多支付的锦标赛（在那时最多），是他在无限制WSOP中获得的$411,000。在2003年他赢得了限制DU罐比赛，给他第6个金手镯。
